Whey has the highest biological protein value and this means the whole amount of protein consumed, absorbs quickly.
Whey protein is very popular among athletes specially bodybuilders since it helps to increase the muscle mass and strength, and of course loses the fat.
Whey supplement increases insulin hormone which contains high levels of leucine amino acid. Leucine stimulates muscle protein synthesis and builds muscle cells.
The best time to consume the whey protein is after exercise. It can also be consumed before the gym either but protein synthesis generally occurs after workout.
There are few popular types of whey protein and their difference is in the percentage of whey protein.
Concentrate: About 80% protein. It contains some lactose (milk sugar) and fat.
Isolate: 90% protein, or higher. It contains less lactose and fat and lacks a lot of the beneficial nutrients found in whey protein concentrate.
Hydrolysate: Is known as hydrolyzed whey, and can be absorbed faster.
It is obvious that the higher value is in the higher level of protein percentage.
Studies have shown that whey protein is also prone to cancer reduction, lowers blood pressure and blood sugar. It reduces cholesterol and symptoms of hepatitis, increases bone mineral density and improves immune function in HIV patients.
